Jazz

A dance form enhanced by freedom and variety

Jazz is a dance form enhanced by the freedom to use movement with a variety of music styles. Like all dance forms, jazz comes from ballet, as it requires having a strong center and excellent balance. Jazz includes strengthening and stretching to achieve better balance, tone, and technique.

Jazz Classes in Rapid City

Jazz 3–6

  • Jazz classes include a variety of turns, leaps, jumps, and jazz-based combinations. The jazz levels coincide with the levels of ballet and have similar requirements for placement.

    • Level 3: Ages 8–11 (3rd grade minimum; placement required)

    • Level 4: Ages 10–14 (5th grade minimum; placement required)

    • Level 5: Ages 13–18 (8th grade minimum; placement required)

    • Level 6: Ages 14–18 (10th grade minimum; placement required)

    • Solid color leotard

      • Prima teachers prefer leotards without large mesh cutouts in the midriff and/or down the front center.

    • Solid color leggings

    • Tan jazz shoes

    • Hair in a bun or ponytail

      • Students must have their hair up in a slicked-back ballet bun, ponytail, (or off the face and neck for those with shorter hair).
